The pharmaceutical industry started out trying to help. Now they are only helping themselves to our health and money. Shame on them and shame on us for not stopping this madness sooner.

Last week praguepot attended a medical marijuana conference in Prague. Four days of science and activism was our idea of an adult Disneyland! We got to see the relationship between cannabis and evolving scientific evidence supporting the claim that pot is in fact medicine. The major conflict of the conference was between pharmaceutical standards for production and dosing of medicine and the reality that cannabis is a natural herb with varying potencies and properties.
Big pharmaceutical actors are rushing to break cannabis down into their various compounds. Synthetic THC and CBD are individually tested on poor lab rats and then people. Individually these chemicals can have positive and negative effects. The only really negative talk of the conference was about the effects of synthetic cannabinoids. Spice or K2 as it is sometimes known can be lethally dangerous for people. After a couple of exposures to synthetic cannabis some unlucky people have had severe kidney problems. I won’t go all geeky on you with the science but basically some of the synthetic chemicals cause inflammation which can lead to kidney failure.
When I pointed out to a politician attending the conference that pot prohibition leads some people to smoke synthetic cannabis and risk very real health dangers, he just shrugged. Until cannabis is legal the system’s hands are tied. So why isn’t cannabis legal? Well, I am afraid we are caught in a frustrating situation. Real scientific evidence is missing from the argument. Synthetic chemicals have been examined. In fact most of the scare stories we have been reading over the last decade or two have been based on the studies of these synthetic experiments. Doing scientific research on pot is very difficult because no two plants have the exact same chemical make up. Even on one plant, different bud sites will have slightly different THC and CBD levels. This is a nightmare for well intentioned scientists seeking to examine the plant. It looks like our favorite herb will need a whole new way of testing before it can be cleared by science.
This is at the heart of the hold up. Science can’t give a clear answer to law makers, so law makers can’t easily give the green light to legalization for fear of being blamed for a zombie apocalypse. While scientists can’t give clear data on cannabis, the herb is widely expected to revolutionize the pharmaceutical industry. Bullish scientists spoke of half of all medication commonly prescribed being replaced by some form of cannabis. This is amazing news for citizens. Getting the medicine you need in a non toxic form will only promote health. For big pharma however, it is their worst case scenario. A new, sensible approach to cannabis is required. There are thousands of different strains with slightly different medical applications. It is time to let Mother Nature have a chance to heal the masses. This is an exciting moment in history. The reintroduction of nature into medicine. Yes, it is a little messy, but when you use cannabis to treat an illness, you don’t get harmful side effects.
Our modern societies have governments drunk on power. Innocently enough they sought to protect the public from crime and then terrorism but has ended up trying to protect us from ourselves. An over protective government is in theory a noble state, add in the warped, corrupting influence of big business, and you get the mess we are in today. Cannabis is, without doubt one of the healthiest substances modern man interacts with. From its anti inflammatory properties, to the calming of damaged nerves, marijuana is a powerful medicine. We are expected to work ten hours a day, maintain an image of success and pick our over stimulated route through the urban jungle of modernity. Promotions, deadlines, office politics. No time to catch your breath or ask, does this life fulfil me?
Powerfully manipulative advertisements are placed at the center of our worlds, whispering that they have the answer to happiness. Buy this jumper, consume that drink, consume consume consume before that big dark hole in your soul swallows you up! Modern society is choking our human potential. Yes we have had huge technical advancements but also devastating poverty. Society has lost balance because only wealth has a voice or a choice.
So what has any of this nonsense got to do with cannabis I hear you ask. Well the two competing forces in society, that of the controlling government and its profit seeking corporate masters have created a legal landscape where alcohol and prescription drugs kill vast numbers of people but remains legal and cannabis, which has scientifically been proven to kill cancer cells and repair our health is illegal. Huge business interests in the pharmaceutical, alcohol and law enforcement industries stand to lose obscene profits as soon as the prohibition of cannabis is lifted. Lost profits rather than the benefit or harm to society is the deciding factor for marijuana’s legal status.
Slowly (too slowly) the science is getting out on pot’s medical benefits. Stress is one of the great silent killers of our society. There is no medication to rival the anti stress properties of marijuana. In spite of the criminal status of the plant a large minority of the population has consumed the plant at some point in their lives. In time, cannabis will be known as one of the greatest natural medicines known to civilization, but for today, you are a criminal in need of incarceration. The freedom our forefathers fought for has been stolen. Grey bureaucrats and vicious business interests have replaced our freedom with self-serving regulations. I didn’t give permission for a government to choose my lifestyle. I don’t accept that government knows more than this new internet generation. We now have the same level of information and guess what? Cannabis cures cancer. They knew this back in the mid 70s but decided not to share this information with civilization as it wasn’t politically advantageous. Government is criminally wrong on cannabis.
Colorado has had a year of legal cannabis, and the only changes seen in society have been positive. Accidental prescription drug overdose deaths are down by a quarter, in the longer term, as cannabis replaces alcohol we will most likely see less liver damage and tension related illnesses. In two American states and Uruguay the citizens are free to use cannabis if they choose. That leaves the rest of the planet, tens of millions of people to remain engaged in criminal behavior, as the law would see it. Cannabis users are making the healthy choice when they decide to consume cannabis over alcohol. The mind expanding plant doesn’t lead to lawlessness and degradation, it leads to a higher state of consciousness and a feeling of connection to both ourselves and Mother Nature. The consumerist ethos of modern society has outlawed this relationship with nature. Until we have our cannabis rights returned to us, the system itself is the problem. Just like we look back at past generations and marvel at their ignorance, future generations will be scratching their heads at pot prohibition, especially after it was known that it cured cancer.
Expensive art on the walls, plush leather sofas and the faint whiff of rich oak. The top floor of a pharmaceutical company is rarefied, filtered air. America is the largest economy on the planet and the pharmaceutical industry is its biggest business. These chemical companies are so powerful within the political system that whatever regulations they want, they get. Globally these companies sell a cool trillion dollars worth of drugs. A trillion dollars in annual sales has bought planes, senators, countries and even common sense.
Cannabis cannot be patented (though they will certainly try to!) so it is of no use to these giant corporations. From all the great science coming out of Israel and Spain we can now clearly see that the plant is a health giving natural substance. The plant when consumed does two very important things. Firstly it is one of the most powerful anti inflammatory agents known to medicine (twice as effective as a cortisone injection) and secondly it regulates cell function. As we age, our bodies naturally develop wear and tear related injuries. These injuries become inflamed and cause pain. Cannabis can step in and bring down this inflammation. I have personally seen organically grown cannabis taking chronic pain away. Pot through regulating human cell functions can kill cancer cells. There are many examples of cannabis oil curing cancer. You see these charity organizations raising millions for cancer research, why isn’t it being used to investigate cannabis and cancer?
Pharmaceutical companies get the money that we raise at charity events and use it to develop drugs that prolong life, not cure the disease. So after getting free money, these pharma drug pushers then sell the drugs back to the public at an obscene profit. Welcome ladies and gentlemen, to the harsh, immoral world of capitalism. Profit before everything else, including sick, dying people. Cannabis can be grown in a small space anywhere. The medical benefits of cannabis keep expanding. Society will be healthier when medical marijuana is finally embraced. Unlike the snake oil sales men that give one pill for your illness and then five more for the side effects, cannabis does the job in a powerful, yet non toxic way. There is no argument left. Big pharma is just playing for time and trying to enrich their executives while they still can. There is a place for pharmaceutical companies, but not at the heart of government. Governments are supposed to look after the interests of the people, corporations only seek to maximize their profits, when government does the bidding of business it is for profit and usually to the detriment of society.
Sick people don’t benefit from cannabis prohibition. The kids (mostly black) that get locked up for possession of the plant don’t benefit. Society now has power thirsty, military police, huge numbers of non violent “criminals” and sick people being pumped full of toxic chemicals that treat one disease but create many more. So who benefits? Surely it couldn’t be that bunch of perma-tanned pharmaceutical executives that award themselves millions of dollars in performance bonuses each year? Cannabis prohibition has taken the only serious threat to the pharmaceutical industry out of the equation. As long as marijuana is illegal they will continue to bask in the trillion dollars they make each year. The corruption is so deep and pervasive that the whole world now thinks cannabis is a dangerous substance. Junk food, pills, booze and inactivity are all a part of our modern life. We have legalized the unhealthy and made illegal the healthy. They might as well ban exercise along with cannabis because it makes about as much sense. We can put rockets into space, replace a mans defective heart but we can’t accept science when it comes to pot? Someone is profiting from this monstrous situation and it isn’t the general population. The only way this situation changes is when we force it to change.
Organically grown cannabis can be an effective treatment for many of today’s most serious illnesses. There is a new Czech law allowing access to pot but so far there has only been a small number of people who have actually been prescribed the natural remedy. The problem is Czech doctors are not educated about the benefits of the plant. In America, cannabis is routinely used to treat the following health issues :
Multiple Sclerosis, Spinal Cord Injury/Disease, Cancer, HIV/AIDS, Severe Arthritis, Epilepsy, ADD/ADHD, Eating Disorders, Arthritis, Auto Accident, Alzheimer’s Disease, Brain Injury, Chronic Pain, Chronic Nausea, Colitis, Crohn’s Disease, Kidney Failure/Dialysis, Fibromyalgia, Irritable Bowl Syndrome, Migraines, Muscular Dystrophy, Muscle Spasms, Parkinson’s Disease, Sleep Disorders, Anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Hepatitis C, Gastrointestinal Disorders, Back & Neck Problems, Depression, Sexual Dysfunction.
Every day in Prague there are people putting toxic prescription drugs in their body to treat these health problems. While fighting one illness the pills cause other negative health side effects. We can avoid this by using cannabis. Czech doctors with no knowledge of cannabis however, are simply not going to prescribe it. So for the many sick patients out there, the underground cannabis market is the only pharmacy they can turn to. As a society we must value both those actually suffering and science. Once it was known that marijuana helps sick people it should have been embraced. America is moving towards fully accepting the medical benefits of the plant, Prague is letting its people suffer.
Lazy, self interest and ignorance is this city’s current strategy. We can do better and there are people out there passionate about bringing cannabis to the center of medical care. We have been sold a lie that medicine can only come in a pharmaceutical pill bottle. It is a new day in a new year and we are at last starting to head in the right direction. Last year’s American pot headlines were a joy to watch. This year we need to confront our European family into action. This will hopefully be the year of the European cannabis social clubs. For the sake of patients who need medical marijuana, these clubs can’t come out into the open quickly enough.
Cannabis is one of the most dangerous substances known to man. It is literally worth locking you in a cage with murderers and rapists just to protect you from this plant.
Praguepot(PP): Sorry big pharma did you say something?
Big pharma(BP): Don’t mind me, I am just mumbling to myself as I lovingly look over my profit and loss statements for 2014.
Praguepot(PP): Good year for you?
Big pharma(BP): In the drug business, it is always a good year! We have the perfect scam going, we give you medicine and then we give you more medicine for the side effects. Each time you pop a pill your system gets weakened.
Praguepot(PP): So you guys don’t really care about helping people?
Big pharma(BP): That is not true. I love helping myself and my fellow big pharmaceutical company executives make a personal fortune.
PP: Do you not feel bad? Don’t forget that the ones taking your drugs are real people.
BP: Listen kid, now that I am filthy rich I have acquired expensive tastes. I only drink expensive wine and over priced food.
PP: What has that got to do with your responsibility to patients looking for cures?
BP: In the pharmaceutical industry, people are just numbers. The more pill poppers the better for me personally. I need a water front holiday home and various other status symbols to deflect the conversation away from how I make my money.
PP: I can imagine. But just between the two of us, how do you make your money?
BP: We use good old fashioned hard work to find cures for diseases. We have massive laboratories filled with the smartest people, systematically testing and creating chemicals. We have invested billions of dollars creating pills that fight depression for example. Once we find drugs that seem to help, we pay scientists to write articles about our discoveries. Next we talk to government agencies about approving these drugs, and by offering jobs in the future or benefits now, we get our shiny drug agency approval.
PP: So this is an expensive, complicated business model.
BP: You better believe it is. We are so incredibly profitable that we want to make it as difficult as possible for some new drug dealer to break into our racket.
PP: So you must hate all this cannabis legalization stuff.
BP: Cannabis becoming legal is our greatest fear. Up until those crazy Colorado folks legalized it we had a near perfect monopoly. We had the drugs that kept people alive, so they had to pay whatever our price was. Now cannabis can be used instead of our pills and even worse for us, everyone can grow their own medicine.
PP: Yes, but from a human evolution point of view this is good news.
BP: What are you talking about? This is a disaster. Once people realize they don’t need toxic pills to cure themselves we are ducked.
PP: What is ducked?
BP: Sorry, I am writing on my iPad, ducked is being fucked, only with more feathers! Pharmaceutical companies only have one task, to make money. We have been successful at this but now that cannabis is making a medical come back we are very worried.
PP: Maybe you could grow pot too.
BP: You don’t understand. We are only about making profit. We could grow marijuana on an industrial scale but then so can other people. That is too much competition for our liking. Our organization has become so big that it can’t change course very easily. Medical Marijuana puts lots of our most profitable pills out of business. For years we paid government officials to talk of the evils of cannabis and we funded research proving how bad it is for you.
PP: So cannabis is bad for your health?
BP: Unfortunately we couldn’t come up with any data proving pot is unhealthy so we just confused the argument with emotional nonsense.
PP: How very clever of you.
BP: Thank you, we have full departments of people working out ways to block cannabis legalization. The only problem is people now know about the health benefits of the plant. Unlike alcohol, when each sip of beer is having a slight but real negative effect on your body, pot is increasing your health. We knew marijuana was healthy but now our customers know it. Cannabis is yet to kill a single patient where as our drugs are consistently killing our patients. It is really hard to demonize the plant when the public knows this.
PP: I guess luckily for you, not all the public knows that yet.
BP: Thanks to our misinformation campaigns we have kept some sick people in ignorant bliss. Just because some of the side effects our pills give are worse than the illness they treat, we shouldn’t start looking for damned hippie natural alternatives. I mean what is so bad about a sudden bout of internal bleeding every once in a while?
PP: Medicine is supposed to help people. When we mix up money with medicine you get the kind of evil that we see today. Cannabis prohibition was a business decision not a public safety one. Pharmaceutical companies have made a fortune out of sick and vulnerable patients. With no natural remedies seemingly available we all became pill poppers. Today pot gives us a natural alternative. I know from personal experience that cannabis treats many ailments so I don’t feel sorry for the massive, obscenely profitable legal drug dealers as they face the destruction of their way of life. All the lobbyists in the world couldn’t keep one very simple truth from the public, cannabis is a natural health giving plant that can replace a surprising number of toxic pills.
And so ends another conversation between a criminal and an up standing citizen. It is amazing that cannabis has been treated as a danger to society when the science proves it is an incredibly healthy plant. Knowledge has and always will be power. Big pharma has profited from our ignorance but that is now changing. Get informed, get active and if you can, get growing!!!
Cannabis is split between indica and sativa strains. Sativa is associated with cerebral highs, energy and day time. Indica is more of a body stone and promotes relaxation and sleep. Getting a good night sleep after a stressful day can be difficult. Sleep research has highlighted the positive role that cannabis has on problem sleepers. Consuming marijuana before bed helped insomniac sufferers fall asleep. This is good news for cannabis consumers but bad news for the pharmaceutical industry. The business of getting you to sleep is a 32 billion dollar business. Those toxic pills and consultants are a growing part of big pharma’s profits.
You don’t have to be a genius to work out that the pharmaceutical industry is going to be completely against legalizing marijuana when you understand that pot can wipe out that 32 billion market over night. Yes the pharmaceutical companies want new jets and off shore bank accounts. Call me a radical but I think that huge sum of money is better off in working families pockets. We have the means to grow our own medicine with cannabis. Before it was made illegal, cannabis was an effective treatment for almost all ailments.
A good nights sleep should not include putting toxins in your body. Fixing one problem but creating another is the pharmaceutical industry’s motto.
It doesn’t have to be this way. The world is in the mess it is because we stopped taking responsibility for ourselves. Cannabis is a powerful medicine. Sleep is the cornerstone of a healthy life. Lets cut out the mega drug dealers(Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline, Eli Lily etc) and grow the medicine for ourselves. The momentum for cannabis legalization is growing but this isn’t enough. We need to be able to produce the medicine for ourselves. Lets take back our good nights sleep with home grown medicine
