Brain size not altered with daily cannabis use, new study finds

Cannabis brain science

A new scientific study has refuted earlier reports that daily cannabis use decreases the size of the brain. With long term alcohol use, a reduction in brain size is a side effect, I guess someone put two and two together and concluded cannabis must be as bad as alcohol. Alcohol is not a natural substance, marijuana is. Our bodies are first introduced to  cannabinoids in our mothers breast milk. As the psychological layers of cynical government propaganda are peeled away, cannabis is being scientifically proven to be healthy for our bodies and minds. The previous studies, either through negligence or design, coupled alcohol use with cannabis use when testing for a change in the size of the brain. So if you don’t smoke tobacco or drink alcohol, then your brain will be perfectly healthy even if you like to consume some cannabis. In previous studies, THC has been shown to protect the brain, especially from serious accident brain traumas. Science report after science report points to marijuana in your system being the safer, healthier state to be in. How do you like them apples.

For the science geeks (yes I am one of them!) I am including the science extract from the journal of neuroscience below.

Recent research has suggested that marijuana use is associated with volumetric and shape differences in subcortical structures, including the nucleus accumbens and amygdala, in a dose-dependent fashion. Replication of such results in well controlled studies is essential to clarify the effects of marijuana. To that end, this retrospective study examined brain morphology in a sample of adult daily marijuana users (n = 29) versus nonusers (n = 29) and a sample of adolescent daily users (n = 50) versus nonusers (n = 50). Groups were matched on a critical confounding variable, alcohol use, to a far greater degree than in previously published studies. We acquired high-resolution MRI scans, and investigated group differences in gray matter using voxel-based morphometry, surface-based morphometry, and shape analysis in structures suggested to be associated with marijuana use, as follows: the nucleus accumbens, amygdala, hippocampus, and cerebellum. No statistically significant differences were found between daily users and nonusers on volume or shape in the regions of interest. Effect sizes suggest that the failure to find differences was not due to a lack of statistical power, but rather was due to the lack of even a modest effect. In sum, the results indicate that, when carefully controlling for alcohol use, gender, age, and other variables, there is no association between marijuana use and standard volumetric or shape measurements of subcortical structures.

Freedom to choose cannabis

Our modern societies have governments drunk on power. Innocently enough they sought to protect the public from crime and then terrorism but has ended up trying to protect us from ourselves. An over protective government is in theory a noble state, add in the warped, corrupting influence of big business, and you get the mess we are in today. Cannabis is, without doubt one of the healthiest substances modern man interacts with. From its anti inflammatory properties, to the calming of damaged nerves, marijuana is a powerful medicine. We are expected to work ten hours a day, maintain an image of success and pick our over stimulated route through the urban jungle of modernity. Promotions, deadlines, office politics. No time to catch your breath or ask, does this life fulfil me?

Powerfully manipulative advertisements are placed at the center of our worlds, whispering that they have the answer to happiness. Buy this jumper, consume that drink, consume consume consume before that big dark hole in your soul swallows you up! Modern society is choking our human potential. Yes we have had huge technical advancements but also devastating poverty. Society has lost balance because only wealth has a voice or a choice.

So what has any of this nonsense got to do with cannabis I hear you ask. Well the two competing forces in society, that of the controlling government and its profit seeking corporate masters have created a legal landscape where alcohol and prescription drugs kill vast numbers of people but remains legal and cannabis, which has scientifically been proven to kill cancer cells and repair our health is illegal. Huge business interests in the pharmaceutical, alcohol and law enforcement industries stand to lose obscene profits as soon as the prohibition of cannabis is lifted. Lost profits rather than the benefit or harm to society is the deciding factor for marijuana’s legal status.

Slowly (too slowly) the science is getting out on pot’s medical benefits. Stress is one of the great silent killers of our society. There is no medication to rival the anti stress properties of marijuana. In spite of the criminal status of the plant a large minority of the population has consumed the plant at some point in their lives. In time, cannabis will be known as one of the greatest natural medicines known to civilization, but for today, you are a criminal in need of incarceration. The freedom our forefathers fought for has been stolen. Grey bureaucrats and vicious business interests have replaced our freedom with self-serving regulations. I didn’t give permission for a government to choose my lifestyle. I don’t accept that government knows more than this new internet generation. We now have the same level of information and guess what? Cannabis cures cancer. They knew this back in the mid 70s but decided not to share this information with civilization as it wasn’t politically advantageous. Government is criminally wrong on cannabis.

Colorado has had a year of legal cannabis, and the only changes seen in society have been positive. Accidental prescription drug overdose deaths are down by a quarter, in the longer term, as cannabis replaces alcohol we will most likely see less liver damage and tension related illnesses. In two American states and Uruguay the citizens are free to use cannabis if they choose. That leaves the rest of the planet, tens of millions of people to remain engaged in criminal behavior, as the law would see it. Cannabis users are making the healthy choice when they decide to consume cannabis over alcohol. The mind expanding plant doesn’t lead to lawlessness and degradation, it leads to a higher state of consciousness and a feeling of connection to both ourselves and Mother Nature. The consumerist ethos of modern society has outlawed this relationship with nature. Until we have our cannabis rights returned to us, the system itself is the problem. Just like we look back at past generations and marvel at their ignorance, future generations will be scratching their heads at pot prohibition, especially after it was known that it cured cancer.

The dangers of Prague pot cookies

“Something has happened”.

Those three words on a chilly Sunday morning were enough to warn me that something serious was going on. I tried calling, but only got a garbled, I can’t talk on the phone. ( To protect Sam from embarrassment, I am changing his name to Brian) I grabbed a warm jacket and rushed over to his place. There was no traffic to stop me or my mind from racing. “Brian” is a medical marijuana grower so I thought he had an accident feeding his young plants or worse. Opening the door to his apartment I could sense the waves of panic he was going through. Normally friendly and happy, Sam, I mean Brian was all business.

I was coming up the escalator from the supermarket when someone from the CIA took my picture he informed me in a hushed, frightened voice. He was slightly hunched over from the oppressive weight of surveillance. Now, not being an expert on security matters I couldn’t with all confidence say the CIA were not taking pictures of Brian, but I thought it was still quite unlikely. You have to remember it was Sunday morning, so the old brain was slow to kick into gear. Brian, have you been eating those pot cookies that we baked yesterday? Yes, I had one or two this morning, why?

I had a simply choice to make, reassure Brian that he is just a bit paranoid from the cookies, or play along with his paranoia. I looked him dead in the eye. Could you describe what this CIA operative looked like, I said. He was kind of fat and not very well dressed. My eyes opened wide, I have just seen him. He is standing out on the pavement taking pictures of this very apartment! We both moved to the window. Look, there he is I said. Out of the corner of my eye I could see the utter terror on Brian’s face and I couldn’t keep it together any longer. After a few moments of laughter , it must have registered how crazy he had sounded. After a quick look to make sure there was no CIA watching from the window, with relief and possibly a little embarrassment he laughed his ass off too.

Edibles are a fun way to consume cannabis, especially in Prague, but you do have to be careful not to eat too much. When cannabis is eaten, it moves from the stomach to the liver where it becomes 11-hydroxy-THC. This new compound can be four to five times more potent than THC, so even a hardened pot consumer can be floored by edibles. Less is more and all that!  If you have an edibles experience, both myself and “Brian” would love to hear about it.

The trillion dollar reason pot is prohibited

big pharma cannabis

Expensive art on the walls, plush leather sofas and the faint whiff of rich oak. The top floor of a pharmaceutical company is rarefied, filtered air. America is the largest economy on the planet and the pharmaceutical industry is its biggest business. These chemical companies are so powerful within the political system that whatever regulations they want, they get. Globally these companies sell a cool trillion dollars worth of drugs. A trillion dollars in annual sales has bought planes, senators, countries and even common sense.

Cannabis cannot be patented (though they will certainly try to!) so it is of no use to these giant corporations. From all the great science coming out of Israel and Spain we can now clearly see that the plant is a health giving natural substance. The plant when consumed does two very important things. Firstly it is one of the most powerful anti inflammatory agents known to medicine (twice as effective as a cortisone injection) and secondly it regulates cell function. As we age, our bodies naturally develop wear and tear related injuries. These injuries become inflamed and cause pain. Cannabis can step in and bring down this inflammation. I have personally seen organically grown cannabis taking chronic pain away. Pot through regulating human cell functions can kill cancer cells. There are many examples of cannabis oil curing cancer. You see these charity organizations raising millions for cancer research, why isn’t it being used to investigate cannabis and cancer?

Pharmaceutical companies get the money that we raise at charity events and use it to develop drugs that prolong life, not cure the disease. So after getting free money, these pharma drug pushers then sell the drugs back to the public at an obscene profit. Welcome ladies and gentlemen, to the harsh, immoral world of capitalism. Profit before everything else, including sick, dying people. Cannabis can be grown in a small space anywhere. The medical benefits of cannabis keep expanding. Society will be healthier when medical marijuana is finally embraced. Unlike the snake oil sales men that give one pill for your illness and then five more for the side effects, cannabis does the job in a powerful, yet non toxic way. There is no argument left. Big pharma is just playing for time and trying to enrich their executives while they still can. There is a place for pharmaceutical companies, but not at the heart of government. Governments are supposed to look after the interests of the people, corporations only seek to maximize their profits, when government does the bidding of business it is for profit and usually to the detriment of society.

Sick people don’t benefit from cannabis prohibition. The kids (mostly black) that get locked up for possession of the plant don’t benefit. Society now has power thirsty, military police, huge numbers of non violent “criminals” and sick people being pumped full of toxic chemicals that treat one disease but create many more. So who benefits? Surely it couldn’t be that bunch of perma-tanned pharmaceutical executives that award themselves millions of dollars in performance bonuses each year? Cannabis prohibition has taken the only serious threat to the pharmaceutical industry out of the equation. As long as marijuana is illegal they will continue to bask in the trillion dollars they make each year. The corruption is so deep and pervasive that the whole world now thinks cannabis is a dangerous substance. Junk food, pills, booze and inactivity are all a part of our modern life. We have legalized the unhealthy and made illegal the healthy. They might as well ban exercise along with cannabis because it makes about as much sense. We can put rockets into space, replace a mans defective heart but we can’t accept science when it comes to pot? Someone is profiting from this monstrous situation and it isn’t the general population. The only way this situation changes is when we force it to change.

A hippie thought on cannabis legalization

cannabis hippie

In a capitalist society, there is no value on something until there is a monetary value prescribed. Unlike other intoxicants, cannabis is a consciousness expanding substance. I hope small, organic growers don’t get pushed out of the industry but once pot gets into main stream society there will be social change. The snarling consumerist society is killing the planet. Mother Nature is an old and wise gal, so it isn’t a coincidence that cannabis is coming into the light now just as the decay of our modern world is beginning to show. A decade from now we will see the results of cannabis in society.

I am predicting a healthier society. Both spiritually and physically better off. Cannabis comes from nature and reconnects us to our planet. The world is ripe for change. This system only works for a handful of people. We only put up with greedy capitalism because we are too busy just trying to survive. The old white male that dominates society says pot makes you lazy. Working three jobs without health insurance is not a productive use of your life. Capitalism values profit, cannabis values the human being beneath.

Big money is developing strategies and distribution channels for their new commodity but they don’t realize that pot is going to change the world. The frequency that our current capitalist society wants us on, keeps us obeying authority. This authority is controlled by massive corporations that only care about profit. Breaking people down into consumer units is big business’s fantasy land. Like a hamster on his wheel we run in virtual circles accumulating a home, it’s contents and a car or two. To pay for this we enslave our one and only life by doing whatever work pays the most.

Cannabis illuminates the folly of this kind of life. We are not born into this world to service the debt that society places around our necks, we were born to express our true nature. Dreamers and philosophers have just as important a role to play as scientists and accountants. Our world must move past capitalism, we are not units, we are from nature and through pot legalization a growing number of people will see capitalism as a parasite. So go ahead greedy hedge fund money managers, go dive and make a pig of yourself in this new green herbal industry. The joke is on you, once your fat little face has been filled, the new industry you came to exploit will change the game. Wall Street says greed is good, but the truth is, it is a sin. A billion dollars is a made up concept that has tricked us into working long hours away from our loved ones. We have one duty here on earth, to fully express who we are, and contrary to capitalist ideology, you can’t fully express yourself in a grey little cubicle. Jai Kali Ma

Medical marijuana in Prague

Prague medical marijuana

Organically grown cannabis can be an effective treatment for many of today’s most serious illnesses. There is a new Czech law allowing access to pot but so far there has only been a small number of people who have actually been prescribed the natural remedy. The problem is Czech doctors are not educated about the benefits of the plant. In America, cannabis is routinely used to treat the following health issues :
Multiple Sclerosis, Spinal Cord Injury/Disease, Cancer, HIV/AIDS, Severe Arthritis, Epilepsy, ADD/ADHD, Eating Disorders, Arthritis, Auto Accident, Alzheimer’s Disease, Brain Injury, Chronic Pain, Chronic Nausea, Colitis, Crohn’s Disease, Kidney Failure/Dialysis, Fibromyalgia, Irritable Bowl Syndrome, Migraines, Muscular Dystrophy, Muscle Spasms, Parkinson’s Disease, Sleep Disorders, Anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Hepatitis C, Gastrointestinal Disorders, Back & Neck Problems, Depression, Sexual Dysfunction.

Every day in Prague there are people putting toxic prescription drugs in their body to treat these health problems. While fighting one illness the pills cause other negative health side effects. We can avoid this by using cannabis. Czech doctors with no knowledge of cannabis however, are simply not going to prescribe it. So for the many sick patients out there, the underground cannabis market is the only pharmacy they can turn to. As a society we must value both those actually suffering and science. Once it was known that marijuana helps sick people it should have been embraced. America is moving towards fully accepting the medical benefits of the plant, Prague is letting its people suffer.

Lazy, self interest and ignorance is this city’s current strategy. We can do better and there are people out there passionate about bringing cannabis to the center of medical care. We have been sold a lie that medicine can only come in a pharmaceutical pill bottle. It is a new day in a new year and we are at last starting to head in the right direction. Last year’s American pot headlines were a joy to watch. This year we need to confront our European family into action. This will hopefully be the year of the European cannabis social clubs. For the sake of patients who need medical marijuana, these clubs can’t come out into the open quickly enough.
