Cannabis is winning the argument

cannabis is safe

Years of anti pot propaganda coupled with a lack of scientific fact leads normal, well meaning people to allow their fellow man be persecuted for consuming a non toxic plant that is scientifically proven to be safer than alcohol. America has all the headlines at the moment. State after state drop cannabis prohibition. The medical use of the plant gets tested and now doctors are prescribing the plant for illness.

Yet still governments hold onto the illegality of pot. They crave the good old days when marijuana was the devils work and we were perpetually the good guys. Pot becoming legal does two big things for those folks in power. Firstly it proves to the younger generations that even though authorities spoke with such certainty about the evils of pot, they were in fact, full of shit and secondly, we now all know that the authorities, so clearly out of touch with fact and reason have no idea what to do next.

I have a suggestion for them. Listen to scientists that are not paid for by alcohol, pharmaceutical or law enforcement industry lobbyists. Listen to science. Cannabis has cancer fighting properties. I have two family members with cancer. Each person reading this knows someone with cancer. One in three people will have some form of cancer in their lifetime and right now, each of us has cancer cells in our bodies. Luckily most cancer cells don’t get a healthy blood supply which lets their growth turn into a deadly tumor. Cannabis inhibits cancer growth and can reprogram cells that have turned cancerous to commit suicide(apoptosis).

How could you make a plant that has scientifically proven cancer fighting properties illegal? We know that politics and business fit tighter than a blood sucker in a blood bank, and it is only this relationship that has kept cannabis illegal all these years. Richard Nixon, the American president that shamefully had to leave office before he was thrown out started the drugs war. The hippie kids were protesting war in Vietnam. They had long hair, love and truth and Nixon hated them for it. He was a politician that only wanted to exercise power, whereas they wanted to change the world into a more loving place. Nixon spent tax payers money creating a military response to his opponents lifestyle choices. America has gone to war with a section of its population. The war on cannabis is a war on people who don’t blindly follow what the government tells them to do. Smoking pot is still mostly illegal and yet there are millions of people who smoke.

cannabis is safe

It is this disobedience that the government can’t stand. Scientific fact means nothing to government, they just want us to obey. If we obey, we are good little consumers that won’t cause any trouble. We will keep our eyes down and let corporations mold society. The world is in the state it is today because of corporate influence. We are knowingly poisoning the planet. Oil companies get vast subsidies and tax breaks to pollute our planet and we allow our food supply to be grown with GMO poisons. Recently American law makers have made it illegal to feed the homeless. That is an extreme right wing law and it has been supported by the police and the power structure. Go deeper and you will find the reason for the homeless people has more to do with the unjust nature of modern society than it does with that persons limited ability to cope with a harsh capitalist environment.

By making pot legal again we are moving those victimized members of society back into the national discourse. We are giving them back their voice and guess what, the old hippie movement in its modern day reincarnation is talking about love and community just like it always has. Cannabis social clubs, medical marijuana, kindness, a fellowship of humans sharing their life journeys. The state used violence. They killed or locked up as many of the hippies as they could but the movement kept moving forward. We don’t have to be in a state of constant war. We don’t need a billion dollars in our bank account, we just need a little more compassion and the belief that when we act together, we defeat the Richard Nixons of this world.

Holland’s backward step

Holland cannabis law

When the world thinks of Amsterdam, it thinks of beautiful canals,  coffee shops, red light districts, Vincent Van Gogh and perhaps Heineken. Holland is also thought of as a model example of forward thinking social policies, especially in regards to cannabis. On Tuesday however, they have taken a dramatic step backwards. The sale of cannabis in coffee shops is still legal but the growing and now even sale of growing equipment is firmly illegal.

As Holland was the only country to have legal cannabis for decades it received the worlds pot smokers. In the beginning this was fun I’m sure, but today those cranky Amsterdam folk are trying to ruin the global party. They don’t want the influx of visitors, tourism obviously isn’t important to their local economy so they are trying to restrict the growing of cannabis until the supply dries up. If we had legal pot everywhere the pressure of demand wouldn’t have been felt so squarely on Amsterdam’s shoulders. Starting this week, the sale of equipment specifically designed for growing pot will be illegal. As other European countries begin to relax their attitude to pot, the Dutch are moving in the opposite direction.

Holland cannabis law

It wasn’t fair on Holland that they were the only country brave enough to legalize cannabis, but they will go down in history as playing a key role in the resistance against the absurd war on drugs. Crime rates went down after pot was legalized. Spain, Germany, Italy, Czech Republic and a few other liberal states all need to now pick up where Holland has left off. Legalizing pot would increase tourism hugely, and as we can see from the Portugese example, dealing with cannabis in a non criminal way benefits everyone. The treatment of problem users rather than the incarceration of all users has proven to be a much more effective strategy. Tax payers money is saved, and society is safer.

Dutch growers are at the cutting edge of marijuana innovation. It was modern day Dutch masters that gave us the infamous White Widow cannabis strain. It is sad news that such creative growers are now being targeted and having their supplies restricted. We have never had as much scientific information about the medical benefits of marijuana. Growers can now target traits within specific cannabis strains and improve on them until they give optimal medicinal benefit. Restricting growers will restrict the advancement of medical marijuana, at least here in Europe.

As evidence of  the medicinal benefits of marijuana increases the true injustice of our current cannabis laws are highlighted. We need change, not only so the next White Widow or charlotte’s web strain can be created but so we can move away from police intrusion into our private lives. We were born free. No man, woman or state has the right to tell us that a non toxic, medically beneficial, plant is illegal. That prohibition is illegal. With the momentum we have from America, it is now up to each of us to advance our movement. Within your world, be the change you want to see. Look at the science and then speak out against prohibition.

Grow room eye damage

grow light eye damage

Feeding done, excess runoff removed from trays and all is right with the world. Time to sit back and take in the beauty of the green canopy you have created. Temps look good, leaves are healthy, now all that is required is patience and vigilance. Unlike the California hippies from the 60s we have an unbelievable amount of knowledge at our fingertips.

grow light eye damage

Youtube video tutorials and chat forums all guide us as we pursue the perfect bud.  Trial and error growing has been replaced by clear advice and insight handed down through the generations and finally placed on the internet.

So what could possibly go wrong, right?

Indoor growing requires strong lights. These metal halide and high pressure sodium lights have done wonders for yield and quality, but they are doing slow, permanent damage to our eyes. I have always felt a strain on my eyes when in a grow room but I guess you are distracted by much more important things. After meeting with the Method Seven guys at the recent cannabis fair in Prague I became aware of the problem and also the solution.

There is quite a bit of science involved in all this so buckle up!

grow light eye damage

Daylight has UVA and UVB radiation in it from the sun. A good pair of sunglasses will filter out this radiation and protect your eyes, but there is a third form of radiation called UVC. The ozone layer very helpfully filters out this radiation outdoors so sun glasses manufacturers do not concern themselves with this filter. In the grow room however those magical MH and HPS bulbs crank out UVC radiation. Good for plants, bad for eyes. Now for the really frightening bit, prolonged exposure to these grow lights can lead to permanent loss of color perception, it can mess up your night vision and give you cataracts.

I got a pair of Method Seven glasses over the weekend. In a few months time I will do another post on how they are working for me, but initially I can feel they take the strain away and let you look at your plants with much better color perception. Marijuana has many health benefits, if you grow it you are helping others but you also need to protect yourself from the harsh working environment. Go on the internet and get as much information as you need and then get the protection. The glasses work and are just as important as all the other vital pieces of equipment in your grow room.

Prague Cannafest 2014

Prague cannafest

At 11am a large crowd of excited pot enthusiasts made their way through the annual Prague cannafest main doors. Pretty girls in skimpy outfits greeted us with smiles and bags of goodies. The three day event saw huge crowds and unlike last year, there was no police presence whatsoever.

On display was the latest growing technology. Lighting, ventilation, nutrients, everything a dedicated grower could ever wish for.  Besides the old reliable seed bank companies, an army of new ones have sprung up. There were impressive deals from Dinafem. I got some and In about three months time I will let you know if that was a good purchase or not!

Of all the new products that I saw, one stood out. A couple of American guys were showcasing glasses that protect your eyes from indoor light radiation. After an interesting five minute chat I went along my way. That night, sitting between two 600 watt HPS lights I began to replay the conversation I had with the Method Seven guys. You don’t look directly at the sun, and yet if you grow, there are lights trying to mimic the sun’s rays a couple of meters from your eyeballs. Oxygen filled room good, eyes being slowly destroyed by grow lights, not so good. After a quick search online it looks like grow light eye damage is a real thing. The first stall I visited the next day was the glasses guys. They had a 600 watt HPS light set up in their display area. Without the glasses, the old familiar strain on your eyes is there but with the glasses on, your eyes can relax. I got a pair and will wear them every time I am in a grow room. In later posts we will look deeper into grower eye damage.

The east hall was packed with activist groups, stages, demonstrations and even a cinema. Speeches from scientists and dreamers incited the crowd. Medical marijuana is a fact. Hemp can replace plastic and be used for food, fuel, clothing and construction materials. When the general public becomes aware of the usefulness of cannabis the debate on its legal status will be over. You can feel  the optimism. Government propaganda and special interest misinformation is discredited and being replaced by marijuana jobs and innovation. Cannabis social clubs for the Europeans and legislation for America. We are heading for legalization, for a brighter, greener more eco responsible tomorrow. The activist, enthusiast and entrepreneur shared the same cannafest roof. Each have their role to play as we push to end prohibition.

Prohibition of cannabis doesn’t work

Prohibition cannabis

Our tax money is spent on police arresting and charging adults who have chosen to consume cannabis rather than the far more dangerous drug alcohol. From a health point of view the cannabis smoker is making the right choice. From society’s  point of view, the pot smoker is making the right choice but apparently from a law and order point of view the cannabis smoker is a threat. The truth is cannabis is a threat to an easier work day for the cop. Arrest a pot smoker and that goes on the cops record as an open and shut case. Leave the bank robbers, rapists and murderers and push tax payers money into buying tanks so the police can raid the still peaceful pot smoker’s home. Shoot his dog and wreck the place as well. In fact the pot raid is the perfect place to play soldier, especially as you have had the training and lots of new soldier toys.

The police like doing raids. Cannabis prohibition is the easiest law to enforce and the one that is doing lasting damage between the public and police. The police are now the others. They are a threat not to be interacted with. Ending prohibition of cannabis will put police back to work on real threats. We are still living in a democracy, find pro pot candidates and vote for them. We have a long way back to real freedom but like every journey, it begins with that very first small step.

What happened to the cannabis edibles halloween poisonings outbreak?

cannabis propaganda

The anti pot side will use and say anything to create fear around marijuana. Just before Halloween we had to watch and listen to factual seeming reports on how many children would be poisoned by pot in Colorado. It is amazing how low these conservative minded dinosaurs will stoop to get what they want. What is more amazing, is the fact that these people’s predictions get reported in the media. Yes there is a bigger game being played. Big pharma, the alcohol industry and the law enforcement industry all have a vested interest in having these stories played out to scare the public, but when a blatant scare story is all you have left you are in trouble.

We need to find the people who clearly just imagined edibles being given to little Sally at Halloween and then reported it as fact, and make them apologize for creating fear. Since when did your imagination count as fact? The media loves reporting fear. Our governments can get away with doing the bidding of their corporate sponsors when they have a public that is afraid. All these new fears is like the later stages of a doomed religious cult. THEY are coming, we had better arm ourselves to the teeth and prepare the poison.

We live in a world where marijuana is seen as a threat but bombing working class people in other countries is a good idea. Where a natural alternative to toxic medicine is a jailable offense but polluting the land gets rewarded with government grants and tax loop holes? Hello?? Join local community groups, get active because lord knows we need a change and the political parties of today cannot give us the change we need. They are business as usual and nothing more. They have nice shiny media marketing tactics but they do not benefit us. Organize locally and then connect with like-minded groups nationally. We don’t need more fear stories about cannabis, we need scientific research. We must take our rights and shed much needed light on the truth. United we are the country. Divided we are simply fearful consumers of rubbish.
