Why America should vote yes for cannabis

Alcohol and cannabis are not the same but they are the closest we can get to comparing similar drugs. Alcohol is a depressant. It lowers your inhibitions and is toxic for your body. A normal drinking session will damage your liver every time. You can overdose on alcohol. What starts as a good night, feeling confident, turns to a loss of control over your body and mind. A drunk person is 16 times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash if they are behind the wheel of a car. The morning after in itself can seem like a car crash. Your body is dehydrated. During the drinking session your body has furiously been trying to expel the poison you so hilariously kept shoveling in. Headaches, pain and general misery as your body seeks to rid itself of the built up toxicity of alcohol.

Yes last night was fun, but oh lord Jesus never again. There is no medical benefit from alcohol, unless you count the millions of, surprise, I’m pregnant conversations. Despite the toxic reaction our body’s have to alcohol use the drug is at the very center of our social life. We like altering our state of conciousness. It gives us a temporary reprieve from the stresses of our lives.

When we match cannabis up against alcohol it highlights the odd nature of the legal system. Alcohol, though fun in normal doses quickly puts both the user and public in danger at higher consumption levels. 2am on a Friday night in most English speaking cities will resemble a war zone rather than a party.

If you are reading this blog, chances are you have smoked pot before. If you smoked a Sativa strain you will have experienced a soaring high and an increase in creative thinking and energy. If you consumed the Indica side of the herb then a powerful body relaxation and “couch lock” effect is felt. Both sides promote relaxation and calmness. Scientists carried out an experiment on cannabis’ ability to treat post traumatic stress disorder. Using cannabis, the patients could relive the stressful moments without the associated mental and physical panic. They began to see the event in the past and not living the memory in the present every time they thought about it. Previously untreatable PTSD patients have been cured. I have been at large outdoor pot parties. In direct contrast to an alcohol fueled party you dont see the same out of control mayhem. Usually it is a chilled experience with longer lines for food stalls.

The munchies you get with cannabis is a result of the cannabinoids in the herb. A mother’s breast milk would also be rich in this compound. It triggers our hunger and makes us eat. Great for babies and great for illnesses and their medicines that suppress hunger. Aids and cancer patients benefit hugely from marijuana because their hunger is stimulated. The medical benefits don’t end there. Cannabis is a powerful anti inflammatory substance. Rubbing cannabis oil on arthritic joints eases the pain. Consuming the plant alleviates painful inflammations within the body. THC protects the brain from trauma and even repairs brain cells that have been damaged by alcohol abuse. Properties of the plant also regulate cell behaviour. As we age, our cells don’t always continue to do their specific jobs as well. Over time this creates illness. When marijuana enters our body it affects our nervous system. It improves cell functions. It gets those older cells back on track and promotes health. Cancer cells have forgotten how to die. In normal cells, if they get damaged they commit suicide. Cancer cells don’t die however, they keep dividing and growing until the human is in danger. Cannabis has been scientifically proven to enter these cancerous cells and remind them to die off. The American government knew this since 1974 but the war on drugs was more important to the political career of that crook, president Nixon than saving the public from cancer.

Alcohol is fun at lower doses but is toxic and creates huge problems in society. Cannabis is perfectly safe, fights cancer, Crohn’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, depression, anxiety and a whole host of other medical conditions. Guess which one of the two is illegal?

We are living in a world where the government says it knows best but the science disproves them. Alcohol is legal, it kills 80,000 people in America each year not including the drunk driver’s carnage. Cannabis is illegal, inspite of the medical benefits and calming effects you get put in a cage with rapists, murderers and hardened criminals when the police find you peacefully enjoying your day with a joint. If you can work out the logic of this please let us all know because I am stumped.

Florida gets to vote on marijuana. Big pharmaceutical companies, alcohol producers and the law enforcement industry are all opposed to cannabis. For each of these industries they will financially lose out with the ending of cannabis prohibition. Police like keeping their tanks and military weapons which are paid for by seizing the assets of a person they catch smoking a joint. It is time for some common sense. Cannabis isn’t evil. It is a gift from Mother Nature and can promote harmony between us. Vote for pot Florida, vote for freedom and common sense.

  • I would hardly alcohol or cannabis a gift from Mother Nature they are both ways of avoiding the normal state of our minds. Some would call them escapist drugs.
Incidentally Mother Nature is an out of date endearing and now meaningless term.
Richard Dawkins has renamed her, she is The Blind Watchmaker who cares nothing for us or anything alive or dead.
The world is a dreadful place for many and escape into drug – dreams is for some in poverty the only way out.
For us rich westerners its an irresponsible cop-out best avoided.

When I say Mother Nature I really mean Kali Ma but I am trying to keep my deeply held Vedic Tradition religious views to myself. Once your opinion doesn’t stop me from doing what I want to do, and my behaviour doesn’t deminish your quality of life then I think we should be natural friends. • Just suppose you encourage more to take cannabis or to drink alcohol thereby depriving them of an active roll in life and making them dependant.
When we believe our actions do not affect others and that gives us freedom of choice we need to be very careful. Our freedom could be someones bondage.
Populations have already been urged into gross obesity by advertisers. Only now are governments worried because of the enormous cost.
We are friends and I bear no grudges nor do I set myself up as a fine example, having often failed in my duty to my fellow man.

      • I totally agree about our words having a bigger impact than we realize. I don’t promote alcohol and I like and respect your attitude to our fellow travelers. I am dead set against alcohol but I was just trying to highlight the absurdity of alcohol being legal and cannabis with its health benefits being made illegal.
I grow marijuana over here for both epileptic patients and cancer sufferers. I have seen this plant improving health and well being. I am a true believer in the plant. I see on social media people celebrating the fact that they smoke pot every day. I don’t think that is how it should be used and I say so when the opportunity arises. The problem is we have had a false information campaign that has propped up the law enforcement industry and confused the publics understanding of the benefits of cannabis. Drug use is a symptom of a social problem created from equality.
I think governments have cynically used the war on drugs for their own political gains and have focused on strong arming poor people instead of investing in their education, health care and housing.
In Europe we have had to follow the American war on drugs but we have also cared for the poor. Educating their children has created a safer more just society. I always say America is technologically advanced whereas Europe is socially advanced.
I get about 10,000 views on my site per month. If you want to write an article about your beliefs and thoughts on cannabis I will post it to give an apposing view on the subject. I am not stuck with one point of view. My mind is open and constantly evolving and I would like to expose people that read this site to more perspectives on this subject.

      • There is a big difference between recreational use and medical use. I am not against drugs except where they are used to change our mental state. I know Aldous Huxley believed in hallucinogenic drugs and he wrote the doors of perception and many havd followed his lead.
Unpleasant as the world is we need to face it not escape from it. By facing the world we have a chance to improve it and that will build our own character.

      • A low dose of cannabis stops tumors forming blood vessels to them which feeds the cancerous growth. Cannabis could be a health boost for our diets, And as for the recreational use, if you don’t want or like pot then that is fine. But you don’t have a right to decide for anyone other than yourself.

We either ignore the problem and criminalize it or we embrace the solution. We have tried the criminal route, we have the huge societal damage to show for it and where are we? One in four human beings behind bars are American citizens? Land of the free?

Educate people on drugs, give them the science (this is what this blog is trying to do) and let rational adults make their own decisions. Tobacco smoking is dying out because it is understood how bad it is for you. Show me a credible scientific study that does the same for cannabis and I will promote it.

Cannabis with heavy use is bad for you in the same way as salt , sugar or any other substance is when you abuse it. Our governments have stepped into our lives without the right to do so. That is far more dangerous to us than cannabis is. Especially when you consider governments win their elections largely based on who gives them money for the elections. I am not naive, if you are given money from big business, you owe them every time! No exceptions, this isn’t a disney movie.

As for altering our state of mind, coffee changes your state of mind, your diet does, exercise does, love does, even the weather does so you can’t pick and choose, especially when we are talking about a non toxic, health benefiting natural substance!

I looked at your blog. You were sticking up for the cop who shot that kid. We differ in our views on that because you think it is us against them. I take a step back and realize both the cop and the kid were afraid. We are living in a violent society because the corporations and absurdly rich want less taxes so they keep more money. Less taxes mean the poor kid who got shot didn’t get the best start in life and it went down hill from there. It is us, the working people against the vampire filthy rich. The black kid and the cop are victims of the same crooked game. We should be working together to create a better society instead of police enforcing laws that suit the rich and criminalize the poor. All three of the last US presidents said they smoked marijuana. The rich can do what they want but a poor mother of three kids is put in jail for ten years for a small bag of weed. Where is the justice?

When do we say we have had enough brutalization. When do we hold hands with our brothers and sisters and say lets make a change. Whatever your views on pot smokers, recreational or medical, they are a peaceful group of people. They don’t want tax loop holes for oil companies. They want love and compassion. I love them for it and I love the herb that mother nature gave to us. I will defend your rights as a fellow working class person. I will not defend the rights of anybody with a billion dollars in the bank. They are the criminals that need to be locked up. No excuses. Jai Kali Ma πŸ™‚

I am very hopeful about tomorrow. Getting cannabis legalized will do a certain amount of community building, then the next cause and the next until we have a society run by the masses for the masses. Yes it is heady, scary stuff but that is evolution for you.

Organized religion may have failed, but the west is becoming more spiritual. Yoga etc is moving into our collective consciousness. Change is happening as we speak. The old wealthy elites will not die off easily but they are dinosaurs. 80 people having more wealth than 3.5 billion will not be tolerated much longer. We have to have an open mind on everything. Manufacturing has left America because the rich made more money moving business abroad. Not a good idea for the American public but government facilitated it and the media said nothing. Now that the end of the road is coming a long the rich want more tax breaks before they move their wealth abroad. Europe will be filled with rich Americans in the end and a hell of a mess. Community activism that unites people (even those you don’t agree with all the time or that share a different ethnic background) instead of divides them is the answer. We need genuine political activism that doesn’t involve the old corporate party politics.

      • Capitalism has done a great job isolating us and making us hungry for greed. When we continue on this exact path, consumption at all costs we will destroy the planet for future generations. I guess if you are not your brothers keeper then you wouldn’t care about the next generation and the ones after that.
We are destroying the planet. Those shiny little things we have been brainwashed into wanting and buying are used and then thrown away. That is double the destruction in one go. Unlike a corporation I do care about the planet. I do care about my brother and feel a deep connection to him. I don’t need your wealth mirage, I am happy and fulfilling my potential with kindness at heart, not a hamster on his wheel frustration that enough is never enough. The capitalist model is the same blue prints a virus uses. Consume the food source and then hope to find a new host or else die.
Also if we are holding up survival of the fittest models, especially within an economic debate, then why have we propped up those massive banks and insurance companies? What about the huge tax welfare transfers of wealth the corporations receive don’t entitle them to claim they are the fittest.
Oil companies get huge government financial assistance, even McDonalds, who pay their workers very little burden the system by then having their workers receive social welfare because the minimum wage is too low. This is another form of subsidy for the huge corporations.
The system is surfing only the greedy elite. They have brainwashed people, through their ever present media to align ordinary peoples interests with the elites interests. Working peoples interest are the exact opposite of the rich.
I am my brothers keeper. One day you may need my help, maybe then you will understand community and oneness.
Never stop learning or evolving. The human male mind becomes too ridge in older age. Pot could help with that, but so can kindness to others and love.

You must stop dividing society into them and us rich and poor is fine but we are all human and greed is part of the human condition.
The best book to teach this is Animal Farm — George Orwell . The animals did away with human control only to find their new masters the pigs were just as bad.
Its a sad story in a way since Orwell was a keen supporter of socialism.
Survival of the fittest in the human rat- race means those who successfully grab most of the cake.

Change will not be pleasant for many, especially the wealthy but it is the only way we will pass this earth in a livable state to our children 1000 years from now. America is in a state but there are countries with higher taxes and less of a wealth gap that are doing fine. Yes Norway has oil but it is also a model society. Unrestrained greed is lethally dangerous for 80% of the population. As we wake up and become increasingly cooperatively concious we can easily have a change in the world.
